What is a 'Prayer Wall'?

A prayer wall consists of 168 people committed to pray for one hour per week to cover the whole of every week. 168 = 7 days x 24 hrs. It can be for a large church or many churches. The immediate vision is to see a first 'round the clock' wall of prayer completed and then to see further prayer walls established across different areas and localities of Bristol. Churches, Youth groups or other Christian organisations can have their own Prayer Walls.

How can I be involved?

By choosing an hour's slot not already taken (See other sheet) and committing yourself to pray for 1 hr. per week every week at the same time. Then fill in the form with your details and give it back to us at the email address (preferred), or address given or leave the completed form on the table. Every month we will send you a Watchman Prayer Focus that gives encouragement possibly via your church representative or church’s email address, news, practical information, update on the Prayer Wall(s), answers to prayer and a fresh focus for prayer for the month. At other times we may send out 'crisis prayer requests' to cover matters for urgent prayer that have arisen. Some prayer issues will remain constant month by month i.e. for unity and spiritual awakening.

Will I be able to sustain prayer for 1 hr.?

Yes! We suggest breaking down the hour's prayer into 6 x 10mins 'bite-sized chunks' (But do allow for blurred edges). It is helpful to use the first two ten minute slots for getting 'settled' in God before bringing our requests to Him. The remaining four slots can focus on fresh prayer needs as well as continuing to bring on-going requests to God.

What other responsibilities will I have?

Each prayer person on the wall (called a 'Watchman') telephones the next Watchman on the wall to hand over the prayer watch - even in the night! It is good to do so with a brief prayer over the phone to bless the next person in their hour of prayer. This means that each Watchman is in touch with the preceding and following intercessor. This is a very important part of the prayer wall because:-

· It enhances the unity of the Body of Christ and cements the wall together.
· It reduces the feeling of isolation of praying on one's own.
· It means each Watchman is prayed for by name personally each week.
· It enables us to monitor that the wall is functioning and not broken down.

What if I am unable to contact the next Watchman?

If you are unable to contact the next intercessor on the wall for two consecutive weeks you should inform your prayer wall representative or let us know so that we can ensure the wall is working together as planned.

What if I don't have a phone or am ex-directory?

We would still value your involvement and would make arrangements for you to stay in touch with someone week by week ie. Via email. If you'd rather your phone number was not public you can just let the preceding intercessor know it to ring you or arrange to ring them.

What if there is no Watchman yet filling the hour adjacent to mine?

As the wall is being built, there may be big gaps between Watchmen. We would ask that you arrange a convenient time to contact the next intercessor on the wall even if this is some hours away. This is particularly necessary during the night since we don't want anyone to be woken up to have the watch passed on when their hour slot isn't until later in the day!

Some of the benefits of the Prayer Wall are:-

· It harnesses prayer's effectiveness in the most practical way allowing people to engage in intercessory prayer at both personal and corporate levels.
· It includes the elderly, house-bound, those with young families, people that work odd hours, etc... No-one is excluded.
· The hour's prayer can be done geographically anywhere.
· Every pray-er will feel part of the larger church in Birmingham and see a bigger picture of what God is wanting to do beyond their local church.
· It enhances the unity of the Churches as we work together.
· Isaiah 62 v.6-7 establishes 'watchmen' over the city in a continuous appeal to God to establish His Kingdom in our community.
· It is consistent with historical outpourings of the Holy Spirit where prayer preceded and helped sustain Revival.
· We are consciously operating under the blessing of God because the 'Father's House' is a 'house of prayer for all Nations' Mark11 v.17.

Some people prefer to pray on their own, whilst others prefer to pray with others.
